GAP: Going Ahead Prepared

Law Student Membership

Thank you for your interest in joining the Nebraska State Bar Association. We hope you will discover in the years to come that the NSBA is your partner in law. We work to provide resources to ensure the success of your legal career. Don’t forget, student membership is free!  (Student Membership Benefit Guide)

Section Membership: Start Building your Professional Network
Build your professional network by joining a NSBA Section. NSBA members can also connect with other attorneys in their area of practice through NSBA Section events, seminars and listservs and gain access to resources developed specifically by Sections. Law Student Members are automatically enrolled in the Young Lawyers Section.

Greater Exposure for your Resume: Get additional exposure for your resume by posting it on the NSBA website by contacting your law school’s Career Services Dean.

The Rural Practice Initiative Bus Tour and Clerkship Program: Are you considering practicing in rural Nebraska? Join us for the Rural Practice Initiative Bus Tour over spring break or register for the Rural Practice Initiative Clerkship Program (information enclosed).

The Going Ahead Prepared (GAP) Program and Other CLE
Learn everything you need to know about practicing law that you didn’t learn in law school. Open to those who recently took the bar and to graduating or just graduated 3Ls. It covers both law practice management and substantive practice areas a new lawyer is likely to encounter, especially if he or she is in a small office or soloing.

Law student rates ($10) can apply to other NSBA Continuing Legal Education seminars upon request. Check the NSBA Calendar. Also, you will be notified about CLE sponsored by your Sections as they are scheduled.

Casemaker- The Legal Research Engine of Nebraska’s Legal Profession
Prepare yourself for practice now by learning to use Casemaker, the free online legal research tool used by more than 70% of attorneys in Nebraska. Casemaker is an online legal research engine similar to Lexis or Westlaw. Casemaker includes legal authorities for all fifty (50) states, plus the federal government, and has a companion mobile application. Casecheck+ works like Shephard’s® and KeyCite® to notify you instantly of negative treatment, identifying whether your case law citations are still good law. CiteCheck analyzes every citation in your brief (or your opponent’s) and provides you with a report of good law, negative treatments and potential citation format errors. Casemaker Digest provides daily summaries of the latest state and federal appellate decisions (within 12-24 hours of publication) classified by practice area. Choose one area, a few or all, and get exactly the information you need when you need it. (see enclosed letter for log-in information).

The NSBA’s electronic newsletter, E-counsel, is emailed every two weeks. Each issue includes Court News, NSBA News, CLE Updates & Practice Tips. Ecounsel is an opt-in service, so to receive the newsletter you must return the enclosed enrollment form.

The Nebraska Lawyer Magazine
The Nebraska Lawyer is published six times a year, offering news, bar events, and substantive legal issues.

The Nebraska Lawyers Assistance Program (NLAP) offers help to lawyers, judges and law students troubled by substance abuse problems, stress, depression and other types of disorders that may have a negative impact on their practice of law or their personal lives. If you have concerns about one of your colleagues—or about yourself, please call NLAP. All information received and provided to NLAP is confidential. The NLAP toll- free hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (888) 584-6527 (NLAP).

If you are aware of anyone within the Nebraska legal community (lawyers, law office personnel, judges, courthouse employees or law students) who suffers a sudden, catastrophic loss due to an unexpected event, illness or injury; the NSBA’s SOLACE Program can likely assist that person in some meaningful way. We have a network of generous Nebraska Licensed Attorneys willing to get involved. We do not solicit cash, but can assist with contributions of clothing, housing, transportation, medical community contacts, and a myriad of other possible solutions through the thousands of contacts to us through the NSBA and its membership.

Let the NSBA assist you with your transition from law school to the legal profession. Many more benefits will become available when you become an attorney member of the NSBA. Once you pass the bar exam, your first year of NSBA membership is free!

Thank you for considering membership in the Nebraska State Bar Association.
