Professional Responsibility

Squeaky Wheels
      by Dennis Carlson

In building and maintaining an attorney-client relationship, the perception of the client is often as important as reality. Here are some things you can do to keep your clients informed:

  1. Explain to the client at the onset of the relationship the various stages of a legal proceeding and provide a tentative timetable for case progression.
  2. Forward copies of all correspondenceto the client.
  3. Forward copies of all pleadings and discovery to the client.
  4. Provide detailed billing statements to the client that set out specific attorney and staff activities.
  5. Forward copies of all court orders and decisions to the client.
  6. Provide copies of all briefs and legal memoranda to the client.
  7. If the case is in a period of inactivity (such as waiting for a trial date or for an appellate argument), explain to the client that there will be a gap in communication
