Rural Practice Initiative (RPI)

The Nebraska State Bar Association and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Law introduces the Rural Opportunities Law Program!

The Nebraska State Bar Association increased its efforts in 2013 to manage the shortage of small town lawyers by starting a rural practice initiative. Currently, 12 of Nebraska’s 93 counties have no lawyers.

The NSBA has created a bus tour which allows law students and new attorneys in practice two years or less to have the opportunity to travel to areas of Greater Nebraska during the law schools spring breaks. Participants will meet with local attorneys and business leaders and experience what each community has to offer a new attorney.

A summer clerkship program was also formed in 2013 to help place students and new attorneys in firms in Greater Nebraska. In 2017, students may apply for one or two 5-week clerkships. Participation by attorneys is critical for the summer clerkship program to succeed. Please help by hiring a student for the summer.

“I would like to thank you and the Nebraska State Bar Association for the housing stipend and for the opportunity to clerk in rural Nebraska. I would not have had the opportunity to clerk where I am and meet several outstanding attorneys without your help or the help of NSBA. It is truly a privilege to be able to work and learn about legal issues and practice in a rural area of Nebraska this summer.

Rural Practice Initiative Associate and Summer Clerkship Placement Program - Wayne NE, September 15, 2017
In-person interviews for our clerkship program or full-time employment will take place at Wayne State College in the Kanter Student Center on Friday, September 15, 2017 from noon to 5:00 pm, with a reception to follow. The goal is to provide 15-20 minutes for each interview. We estimate that each attorney will have the opportunity to interview at
least six students in the afternoon. Attorneys and students will have an additional opportunity to meet and converse at a reception following the formal interviewing session.

If you are interested in hiring an associate or a law clerk for the summer of 2018, and return to Sam Clinch, 635 S 14th St. #200, Lincoln, NE 68508. Please respond by September 1, 2017.
