Rural Practice Initiative FAQ

Q. What are the dates of the clerkship?
A. You may hire a clerk for a 5 week clerkship or even consecutive 5 week clerkships. The specific dates are mutually agreed upon by the attorney and clerk.

Q. How much do I have to pay?
A: That is up to each participating attorney. It is recommended that the compensation be at least $15 per hour for a 40-hour week. Some of that cost can be recouped by billing some of the clerk’s time.

Q. What can I expect from a student?
A. The attorneys who participated last year report that the clerks drafted pleadings, shadowed the lawyer during court days and client meetings, prepared briefs and did title opinions.

Q. Where do the students live?

A. We ask the participating attorney to help find housing for the student.

Q. How do I hire a clerk?
A. Click on the link below titled “Resumes”. If you are interested in a student, please contact them directly.
