BALANCING LIFE AND PRACTICE
If the summer is a slow time for your business, it's probably a good
time to take care of some of the chores you've been putting off for
a while.
With customers away or having some down time themselves, you'll have
more freedom to evaluate your company's finances, think about formulating
some employment policies and have some maintenance work done around
the office.
Perhaps the top item on your agenda should be a financial checkup for
your business...(more)

them. But don't kid yourself: This article applies to experienced attorneys,
too. What follows is a "top 10" list for becoming a better

NCLE HOSTS FIRST LIVE WEBCAST
NCLE hosted its first live webcast on Friday (the 13th!) of August
at the Roman Hruska Law Center. All went well and the audience responded
positively to the program. The three-segment seven-hour program covered
health-care litigation and focused on a scneario involving a nursing
home. Ethics, trial and litigation issues, and document management in
complex cases were all discussed. In a live webcast, the speakers are
viewed through streaming video, but are live in the studio and can respond
to questions via telephone. 14 registered for this program and said
they enjoyed being able to view the webcast, walk around and get refreshment,
and step outside if necessary without worrying about the speakers (who
of course could not see us!). They appreciated the materials and the
relaxed atmosphere. NCLE's next live webcast is scheduled for October
15 here in Lincoln, and will cover complex litigation involving environmental
issues. Watch for more information soon.

PRACTICE TIP: THANK YOU
Create a "Thank You" file. In it should go the letters
from satisfied clients, the replies from speaking engagements, the Little
League support letter-anything that demonstrates that you are making
a positive difference in someone's life. What gets measured gets done.
Start measuring the impact that you are having on the world. After all,
it's a wonderful life!

PRACTICE TIP:COPIES FOR THE CLIENT
When you are engaged by a new client, provide him or her with a
sturdy file folder bearing a label with your firm's name, address, phone
and fax numbers, e-mail, etc. Place a signed copy of the fee agreement
in the file as the first document. Further explain to the client that
you will be sending copies of everything related to the case, both documents
you generate and those you receive, and that the client should place
these documents in the file immediately when received. Many clients
don't have an adequate at-home filing system; the things you send, therefore,
may end up on the kitchen counter decorated with applesauce or as someone's
telephone message slip. By the end of representation (or at any point
in between), your client will have a complete copy of their file.
