Responsibility
Squeaky Wheels
by Dennis Carlson
In
building and maintaining an attorney-client relationship, the
perception of the client is often as important as reality. Here
are some things you can do to keep your clients informed:
-
Explain to the client at the onset of the relationship the
various stages of a legal proceeding and provide a tentative
timetable for case progression.
-
Forward copies of all correspondenceto the client.
-
Forward copies of all pleadings and discovery to the client.
-
Provide detailed billing statements to the client that set
out specific attorney and staff activities.
-
Forward copies of all court orders and decisions to the client.
-
Provide copies of all briefs and legal memoranda to the client.
-
If the case is in a period of inactivity (such as waiting
for a trial date or for an appellate argument), explain to
the client that there will be a gap in communication
