This program will address diversity in the legal profession and assist lawyers in the “improvement of the law, access to the legal system, the administration of justice and the quality of service rendered by the legal profession” (Preamble to the Nebraska Rules of Professional Conduct). The presentation will help lawyers become more culturally competent with the topics of sex, gender, and bias. This presentation will educate lawyers on the basics of orientation and gender identity in order to improve the culture and to create a common language from which more work can be done.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the components of the biology, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation spectrums.
  • Describe the different identities related to one’s gender identity or gender expression.
  • Discuss implicit bias affecting the LGBTQ community.
  • Integrate practical changes to language to better serve the LGBTQ community.
