The role of NLAP includes helping lawyers, judges and law students troubled by substance abuse problems, cognitive decline, stress, depression and other types of disorders. A way NLAP is able to do this is through education and prevention programs which support attorney wellness. This session will explain the role of NLAP in assisting attorneys with developing healthy habits in order to prevent attorneys from developing unhealthy habits which may impair their ability to perform in a competent and professional manner.

Most people, including lawyers, want to live with vitality - to live a higher quality of life longer. Yet, the law is a jealous mistress! It wants all your time. Unfortunately, that gets in the way of self-care.  What you put on your fork, how you use your feet, who you connect with, and how you feed your soul are keystones to better living, more productivity, and a healthier you. This session will nudge you in the right direction to upgrade your energy, focus and productivity by providing a self-assessment and goal setting to help lawyers reboot to be stronger, healthier, and happier.

At the conclusion of this session, lawyers will be able to:

  • Enhance holistic wellness through healthboosting foods, physical activity, well-being, and sleep quality.
  • Assess his/her own status in meeting nutrition and activity recommendations to reduce risk of chronic disease development and other health problems.
  • Develop three goals to improve nutrition and activity to reduce risk of chronic disease development and other health problems and increase energy and productivity.
  • Identify proven practices to live a higher quality of life.

12:45 pm   The Path to Lawyer Well-Being: Practical Recommendations for Positive Change

In 2017, the ABA organized a National Task Force on Lawyer Well-Being who subsequently released the report The Path to Well-Being: Practical Recommendations for Positive Change. This session will examine these recommendations directed to legal employers and discuss best practices for legal employers in the area of attorney wellness.
