This FREE CLE is for current volunteer attorneys and attorneys who agree to perform pro bono activities through VLP or Legal Aid of Nebraska in 2020 and 2021. By registering to attend this CLE for FREE, you agree to volunteer for VLP or Legal Aid of Nebraska in 2020 and 2021. You will be contacted after the CLE to discuss volunteer opportunities. We appreciate your support!

This three-hour CLE will address pro bono legal service programs facilitated by Legal Aid of Nebraska and the Nebraska State Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project. This CLE provides new and seasoned lawyers a review of general substantive law, procedure, and practical advice for assisting self-represented persons through a legal advice clinic.

Child Support Modification
Marian (“Muirne”) Heaney, Legal Aid of Nebraska

This session will review resources available to assist self-represented persons in child support modification actions. The speaker will discuss the Nebraska Child Support guidelines and Nebraska Child Support calculator. This session will inform participants about the self-help forms and will identify legal resources that may be available to self-represented persons.

Name Changes
Joni Watke, Watke, Polk & Stacy

This session provides an overview of the requirements to file an uncontested name change using self-help forms. Participants will be provided a general overview of jurisdiction, court procedures, and other specific requirements for self-represented litigants. This presentation will provide a discussion involving use of self-help forms.

Tenant Issues
Scott Mertz , Legal Aid of Nebraska; Ryan Sullivan, University of Nebraska College of Law

Many self-represented persons experience issues involving housing and eviction. There are no self-help forms for tenant issues. This session will provide an overview of the Nebraska Landlord Tenant Act, tenant and landlord responsibilities, and the eviction process. Participants will learn about resources and legal aid services available to self-represented persons.

Criminal Record Set-Aside and Sealing
Marian (“Muirne”) Heaney, Legal Aid of Nebraska

This session will discuss the differences between a pardon and set-aside of a criminal record, along with the criteria that must be met to obtain a set-aside. This session will also explore the parameters for requesting the sealing of a record. An overview of the self-help forms and court procedure will be provided, as well as legal aid services that may be available to self-represented litigants.
