The majority of busy practitioners at some time will face some complaint or accusation of either a client or an opposing party as to Ethics. While various disciplinary agencies have their own rules, this course guides the practitioner on the appropriate activities to prepare a response, advice as to deadlines, integrity, and what actions to avoid in responding. The course also discusses how to respond when the attorney knows the complaint may have merit.


Hour 2: Resilience Training: Performance & Interpersonal Management Skills for a Better Practice and a Better Life

For too many attorneys the stress of practicing law has led to depression and problematic behaviors. But why can some lawyers handle the stress while others can’t? In this session, Doron will discuss the generational divide within the legal profession on the topic of wellness; offer ways to challenge commonly held internal beliefs surrounding wellness and seeking help; and share practical advice for lawyers, firms, and the profession.

Doron Gold , BA, JD, MSW, RSW, CPCC, is a psychotherapist and former practicing lawyer living and working in Toronto, Canada. He is registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers as well as with the Law Society of Upper Canada. Doron’s practice focusses on individual, family and group therapy related to issues of depression, anxiety, career and family stress and addiction. Doron works primarily with a diverse client base comprising people from all walks of life. He also specializes in assisting lawyers, law students, judges as well as other professionals. His personal experience working in the legal profession, coupled with his many years of experiences working with lawyers in distress at the Ontario Lawyers’ Assistance Program (OLAP) have given him a unique and valuable perspective on the challenges faced by these individuals.

In 2006, Doron determined that the adversarial legal process was not the most constructive avenue through which he could help people. He certified as a personal coach through the Coaches Training Institute and subsequently completed his Masters of Social Work, both of which fit perfectly into the work he began doing for lawyers through OLAP. He would speak daily with legal professionals in distress and help them move towards healing and wellness. He currently writes a bi-monthly column in Law Times as The Lawyer Therapist.

This program will address the risks of suicide and self-harm within the legal profession and examine what resources are available to individuals in crisis and people concerned about someone who may be at risk for suicide. Dr. Dave Meirs, senior director of behavioral health services at Bryan Medical Center in Lincoln, will take us through QPR training (Question, Persuade, and Refer), which trains participants to be able to recognize the warning signs of suicide and question, persuade, and refer people at risk of suicide for help. The balance of our 2-hour program will then turn to identifying and overcoming barriers that legal professionals have identified to getting help with mental health, substance use, or cognitive challenges.
