LSAT Prep Scholarship
The Minority Justice Committee works to expand the pipeline of diverse law school applicants. The LSAT Prep Scholarship Program provides a scholarship for a Kaplan LSAT Prep Course covers the costs of registering for the LSAT exam for recipients who are historically underrepresented in Nebraska's law schools, demonstrate economic need, and reside in Nebraska. The number of scholarships awarded annually is dependent on charitable contributions. The scholarship program reaches both traditional and non-traditional students from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds. On average, students achieve a seven point increase on their LSAT exam score. Download the Application and Instruction Sheet.
Volunteer Lawyers Project
Winners: "50 Days of Pro Bono" Campaign
Jennifer Thompson and Shirley Peng each received two tickets to attend the 13th annual Barristers' Ball, Saturday, March 18, 2017, at the Embassy Suites in La Vista, Nebraska. VLP sponsored the "50 Days of Pro Bono" October-December 2016, entering names of attorneys who volunteered to accept a VLP case or who registered for NE Free Legal Answers online during the campaign. Jennifer and Shirley are among the many volunteers who contribute time or resources in support of VLP programs and events. The proceeds of The Barristers' Ball (including dinner, dancing and silent and live auctions) benefit the NSBA Volunteer Lawyers Project, including case placement, recruitment and training of volunteers, paying litigation expenses, and the coordination and staffing of Self Help Desks across the state.

Evidence Handbook Update
The Nebraska Evidence Handbook, often referred to as Judge Gossett’s Evidence Handbook, is current through 2012 cases. The handbook provides Nebraska’s evidence rules, along with extremely brief summaries of cases that have applied or interpreted the rules. NSBA is considering an update to the handbook, and would like your comments on the following:
- Is the handbook still useful enough that it should be updated?
- An update would incorporate all new material into the manual rather than adding it as a supplement to the original manual. Are there other organizational changes that would make the manual more useful?
NSBA is also considering assembling a team of volunteer lawyers who are interested in updating and maintaining the handbook. Volunteers can be located anywhere and need not have special expertise in litigation to be valuable contributors. With a team of volunteers, the work shouldn’t be burdensome for anyone. Marc Pearce, Assistant Dean at the University of Nebraska College of Law and the author of the prior updates, is available to serve as an advisor to the new team.
The current handbook is available for free to all NSBA voluntary dues-payers. You’ll find it in the online NSBA Library on the Litigation and Appellate Practice webpage. Please send your comments or volunteer to be part of an update team by contacting NSBA Publications Director Lorrie Benson at firstname.lastname@example.org or 402-475-7091.

Why Alternative Litigation Financing Is Poised to Disrupt Litigation
By Stephen F. Embry, Originally Published in ABA Law Practice Today
In April 2016, an independent state university school newspaper, the Kentucky Kernel, made an Open Records Act demand on the University of Kentucky, seeking documents related to allegations of sexual harassment by a tenured faculty member. The university denied most of the request, but the Kernel sought and obtained a state attorney general opinion that vindicated its position and opined that the university should turn over the requested records.
