Uh-oh. The subpoena wasn’t quashed—minor stumble; you’ll recover. Oh, no! Your opponent’s motion for summary judgment was granted—a serious setback. Yikes! You lost the appeal—you’re done. AAARRGGHH! Your appeal was dismissed because you failed to conform to the rules—call your insurance carrier. In any of the above situations, you must notify your client. I work with a lot of solo lawyers, both in my client base (unfortunately, ethics cases arise more frequently in solo practice), and in my network of professional colleagues. My colleagues in the ethics defense bar are frequently solos, and I cultivate a network of other lone wolves to compensate for the fact that I do sit alone in my office much of the time and have no one to bounce ideas off of, commiserate with when things go wrong or celebrate with when things go right. The Volunteer Lawyers Project
The American Bar Association urges lawyers to provide a minimum 50 hours of pro bono services annually. To help lawyers achieve this goal, the Volunteer Lawyers Project is working to provide pro bono legal service opportunities that are convenient, rewarding, and impactful. Please log in to the new Attorney Portal to review case lists of Nebraska residents who need a pro bono attorney, volunteer to meet individuals at a Self Help Center or to view upcoming pro bono events. The Attorney Portal is available 24/7. All Nebraska lawyers have a user name and password to access the Attorney Portal. If you have difficulty or need assistance logging in, use the Forgot Password link or contact the NSBA administrative department at (402) 475-7091. The portal is still in development. VLP will be adding new tools and information over the next few months.
Ethical Obligations Regarding Technology
Lawyers have an ethical obligation to have a working knowledge of technology and stay current as technology evolves. On Wednesday, April 6 the Senior Lawyers Section is sponsoring a one-hour program on lawyers’ ethical obligations to remain technologically competent. It will cover the basic technology skills lawyers should master and how they can achieve this goal. The noon-hour program will be available live in Lincoln and via webinar. Nine Submit their Names for County Court Judge in the Third Judicial District
Nicholas M. Froeschl, Milissa D. Johnson-Wiles, Susan L. Kirchmann, Daniel D. Packard, Nancy K. Peterson, Rodney D. Reuter, Eddy M. Rodell, Hobert B. Rupe, and Christopher D. Seifert, all of Lincoln, have submitted applications for appointment as County Court Judge in the 3rd Judicial District (Lancaster County). The primary place of office for the judicial vacancy is Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska. The vacancy is due to the retirement of Judge James L. Foster. Full Press Release
Public Notice For Appointment Of New Magistrate Judges
Chief Judge Laurie Smith Camp announced today that the U.S. District Court for the District of Nebraska will expand its search process to seek two magistrate judges to succeed Magistrate Judge Thomas D. Thalken, who will retire on December 31, 2016, and Magistrate Judge F.A. Gossett, III, who will retire on June 30, 2017. Applications are due on or before March 14, 2016. Information about the positions and the selection process, as well as an application form, can be obtained through the court’s website at http://www.ned.uscourts.gov/attorney/appointment-of-magistrate-judge.
