Baseball: Game On!
The baseball outing originally scheduled for April has been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 17, and there are still a few tickets left. Rain forced the postponement of the event organized by the Senior Lawyers and Young Lawyers Sections. The event is open to all lawyers and their guests, with a special invitation extended to section members. The evening starts with appetizers and drinks from 5-6 pm at The Session Room, which is a couple blocks from Ameritrade Park in Omaha. At 6:30 pm Creighton and UNL will meet on the diamond. Cheer on your alma mater or pick a team to support while you get acquainted with fellow lawyers. Tickets are $10 each and include the game ticket, and one drink and appetizers at The Session Room. Tickets will be passed out at the pregame event and at the ball park for those arriving at game time. If you register for this event and then find you can’t attend, please contact Lorrie Benson at NSBA so we can give your tickets to someone else.

District Judge Steven D. Burns to Retire May 31, 2016
Judge of the District Court, for the Third Judicial District, Steven D. Burns, is retiring effective May 31, 2016. In his letter of retirement to the Governor, Judge Burns noted, “It has been a privilege to serve the people of Nebraska in this position of trust.” In 2014, Judge Burns received the Nebraska Supreme Court’s Outstanding Judge Award for Service to the Community for his volunteerism, which ranges from local, to national, to international activities. At home, Burns is a regular volunteer in the kitchen at Matt Talbot, making and serving dinner for homeless men, women, and children in the city of Lincoln. Full Press Release
May 11, 2016, Application Deadline Set for Supreme Court Judge Vacancy, Fifth Judicial District
According to Supreme Court Justice Stephanie F. Stacy, the Judicial Nominating Commission for Supreme Court Judge in the 5th Judicial District will hold a public hearing in the District Courtroom at the York County Courthouse, 510 Lincoln Avenue, in York, Nebraska, beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2016. At the hearing, the Commission will receive information on the qualifications of candidates to fill the vacancy in the office of Supreme Court Judge due to the retirement of Judge William M. NSBA Executive Council- 5th and 6th Districts
Notifications and petitions will be sent to the 5th and 6th Supreme Court Districts on April 29, 2016 for the Executive Council vacancies. The deadline for returning a petition will be May 30, 2016. Executive Council terms are four years.

2016 Barristers' Ball - Once Upon A Time.... A Royal Barristers' Ball (pictures now available)
On April 16th over 485 people attending the Barristers’ Ball at the La Vista Embassy Suites. The attendees enjoyed a night of dining, bidding and dancing to Pam and the Pearls. This year’s Barristers’ Ball was dedicated to recognizing the efforts of volunteer lawyers and supporters of the Nebraska Lawyers Foundation. Karisa Johnson, Judge Stephen Swartz and the Omaha Bar Association were all recognized for their contributions and commitment to the Nebraska State Bar Association. Over $87,000 was raised to help support the Volunteer Lawyers Project, the Nebraska Lawyers Assistance Program and the Rural Practice Initiative.
