Lacking Lawyers, Plains States Try New Rural Staffing Tacks
In Wheeler County, Nebraska, if you want a divorce, attorneys who can help you are nearly 50 miles away.
There’s only one attorney, James McNally, in the north-central county, and he is its sole prosecutor. He’s been there for 50 years and was at one point one of five attorneys. He has a side practice handling probate and estate services, but obviously can’t take criminal defense cases.
There’s a reason more lawyers don’t land in places like Wheeler County, one of 11 counties that have no attorneys outside of elected prosecutors, he said. With so few people to serve and recent graduates carrying loads of student debt, it just doesn’t pay, he said. Full Article in Washington Post

2017 NSBA Voluntary Dues Waiver
Any member of NSBA suffering a serious financial hardship due to: unemployment, costly medical issues, bankruptcy or other serious financial issues can apply for partial or full waiver of their voluntary dues. The Dues Assistance application requires applicants to certify that payment of dues would pose a serious financial hardship for them and submit a letter explaining the reason for the request based on financial hardship. Look for the new Federal Law Section and the new International Law Committee when you pay your 2017 NSBA voluntary dues. The Federal Law Section, chaired by Tessie Smith, will serve as a way to better connect the federal courts and practitioners, and offer CLE and networking opportunities. The International Law Committee, under the umbrella of the Business Law Section, is for lawyers practicing any type of international law—not just business law. Chair Grant Leach is planning CLEs on topics such as working in China and international e-docs, as well as a directory of all international practitioners, including which countries they work in, type of work, etc. Those interested can join the Business Law Section and then opt into the International Law Committee at no extra charge. The American Bar Association’s 2014 World Justice Project Rule of Law Index shows the United States rating 65th out of 100 countries for access to and affordability of civil legal services, the lowest ranking among all industrialized nations surveyed. This finding, coupled with a trend toward self-representation and an overall Do It Yourself movement, has been driven by obstacles to legal help and the widespread use of technology. A growing number of legal consumers are self-educating and becoming comfortable with handling tasks traditionally performed by attorneys.
