NSBA Health Insurance Consortium
Both small and large law firms face challenges in relation to the availability of health insurance options as well as the rising costs of these options. The Nebraska State Bar Association is working to offer a health insurance option for its members by establishing the NSBA Health Insurance Consortium. In simple terms, the Consortium will consist of multiple employers, with NSBA membership, working together to obtain affordable health insurance coverage on terms similar to those available only to large employers. The Consortium allows member employers to negotiate and to manage the coverage as a single entity. The Consortium’s plan will be a multiple employer welfare arrangement or a “MEWA,” several of which have existed in Nebraska for decades. Here are some of the advantages of participation in the Consortium:
- Affordable Coverage: By pooling together, employers are better positioned to obtain more affordable health insurance coverage due to economies of scale, managing savings, and spreading risk.
- Flexibility: The Consortium expects to offer a variety of ACA compliant health plan options. Each employer in the Consortium would have the option of selecting the type of health plan or plans that works best for its employees (high deductible plan vs. low deductible plan, etc.).
- A Stable Community: The NSBA’s goal is to create and to encourage a stable community of employers participating in the Consortium. When a group has a stable environment, annual rate fluctuations are less likely and less dramatic from year to year.
- Available to Family Members: Employers participating in the Consortium may offer family and dependent coverage to their employees.
- Member Governed: The Consortium will be governed by participating employers in the Consortium and Consortium leadership will be elected by those participating employers. Thus, the individuals making decisions about the Consortium’s plan have a vested interest in offering the best possible coverage options at the best possible price.
Blue Cross Blue Shield Nebraska, Medica, and United Healthcare have indicated an interest in providing health plan options to the Consortium. In order for us to provide you with the information you need in order to decide if joining the Consortium is the right option for your firm, we need to provide information to these insurers about the potential pool so that they can provide us with accurate quotes.
If you feel that your firm would be interested in seeking more affordable health insurance coverage through the Consortium, we need you to participate in a brief survey which will be disseminated electronically in February. We only need one response per firm. If we have a sufficient response to the survey, we will request proposals from the interested insurance companies and provide you with the coverage options and information about premiums that you need in order to make an informed decision in time to participate in open enrollment for 2019. If you firm or organization is interested in learning more, the NSBA would be happy to meet with you. Please contact Liz Neeley at 402-475-7091 or via email at Lneeley@nebar.com.

Completely Updated Red Book Available
The Nebraska Real Estate Practice Manual, often referred to as The Red Book, has been completely updated and is now available. It’s available electronically on a flash drive ($285 members/$315 nonmembers) or electronically plus in print ($345 members/$375 nonmembers). The additional charge for the print version just barely covers the cost of printing the 2000 pages, three large binders, pre-printed tabs and shipping.
The updated Red Book is the product of terrific generosity by dozens of lawyers. In addition to the chapters on buying/selling/leasing real estate you’d expect to find, there are primers on surveys and descriptions, zoning, HOAs and COAs, oil and gas leases, deeds, quiet title actions, like-kind exchanges, title insurance, SIDs, Fair Housing Act, and partition actions. New chapters include easements and other restrictions, acknowledgments, environmental issues, wind leases, TIF and other incentives, valuation protests and appeals, treasurer’s tax deeds, TODDs, and corrective instruments.
A word about NSBA’s Purchaser Honor System Policy: Practice Manual sales are an important source of revenue for NSBA that help keep member dues some of the lowest bar dues in the US. If multiple individuals in a firm will use this resource, please purchase a copy for each user.

Casemaker Weekly Update
Casemaker offers you not just current statutes, rules, and session law - but archived versions as well. There are a number of ways to locate the archive versions of content. If you are reading the content of a rule or statute, you will see a tab in the grey bar labeled “Archive.” Clicking on that tab will show you a page of years giving you the ability to see the rule or statute in previous years. If you click on a state library you can also find a tab labeled “Archive” in the blue bar at the top of the list of library sections. If you click on Federal materials you will find a similar link in the grey bar above the list of Federal materials. These archive links on the library pages will take you to a page that allows you to choose which archive you would like to view. You can also find the archives in Tree View by expanding any section that has archives and clicking on the year you wish to view.
Changing Font Size
You have the ability to increase the font with just one click. When you are viewing a document in Casemaker you can click on the button labeled Aa in the gray bar above the document content. By clicking on this button the text size gets significantly larger. Click it again and it returns to standard size.
Narrowing your Search
Are your results just too much? If you are finding too many documents, you can always narrow your search. Once you have submitted your query you can see the various document types that your results included in a list on the left side of the screen. Click on the category you prefer to get all the results in that document category. Once your results load, you will notice a new menu will appear on the left side of the screen. This menu offers you a variety of ways to further narrow your search. For example, you can narrow by state, court, date, and keyword. Casemaker will automatically filter your results after you click the checkbox next to your choice. Take note, in some cases, you may have to click the Show All link to see all the possible options.
