Employment Law Focus of First Section Event
NSBA’s new Federal Law Section and the Nebraska Chapter of the Federal Bar Association are co-hosting their first big CLE seminar on Friday, Feb 17 in Omaha. The seminar will focus on a variety of employment law issues as they intersect with other issues or bodies of law, including bankruptcy, immigration, social media and state and local issues government employees. This is a great chance to check out the new section, meet its members, and hear more about the section’s future plans. Seminar details and registration are available online.
Evidence Handbook Update
The Nebraska Evidence Handbook, often referred to as Judge Gossett’s Evidence Handbook, is current through 2012 cases. The handbook provides Nebraska’s evidence rules, along with extremely brief summaries of cases that have applied or interpreted the rules. A generous group of volunteers is undertaking an update to the handbook and could use a few more volunteers for the effort. With a few more volunteers no one will find the work too burdensome. Volunteers can be located anywhere and need not have special expertise in litigation to be valuable contributors. Current volunteers are Judge Stefanie Martinez, Judge Alan Gless (retired), Christian Williams, Shurie Graeve and Carol Svolos, with Marc Pearce as an advisory member.
The team is also interested in hearing from you how you use the manual. For example, do you take it to court as a quick reference? Are you more likely to use a searchable electronic version or a paper version? Are there any changes to the organization of the manual that would make it more useful?
The current handbook is available for free to all NSBA voluntary dues-payers. You’ll find it in the online NSBA Library on the Litigation and Appellate Practice webpage. Please send your comments or volunteer to be part of an update team by contacting NSBA Publications Director Lorrie Benson at firstname.lastname@example.org or 402-475-7091.

Delegate, Don’t Abdicate, Client Trust Accounting
By Sheila Blackford, Originally Published in Attorneys at Work
Well-meaning lawyers who struggle to balance their personal checking account may think the safest way to protect their client trust account is to find a knowledgeable bookkeeper or CPA to take charge of it. In practice, though, this can add up to an ethics violation for shirking responsibility to properly manage the trust account.
The problem arises when the lawyer doesn’t merely delegate responsibility but actually abdicates responsibility for the trust account. What is the difference? Let’s look at two lawyers in action and inaction. Full Article
Going Virtual: The Modern-Day Law Firm is in the Cloud
By Brooke Moore, Originally Published in ABA Law Practice Today
You hear the term “virtual,” and you think of something distant or not real. Not true for the virtual law firm model. This is a viable alternative business model for real lawyers to connect with clients in a very meaningful way. Legal consumers are driving change in how we provide services and are growing more comfortable conducting their business online.
So what exactly is a virtual law firm? A fully virtual law firm is a web-based law firm model for the delivery of legal services, providing easier access to legal consumers and the flexibility to meet evolving consumer demand. A virtual law firm is a real law firm bound by the same procedural requirements and ethical rules as a traditional law firm, with the difference being how services are delivered. Full Article
