VLP Collaborates with Legal Aid of Nebraska to Provide Legal Services to Disaster Victims
Nebraska families and communities have suffered mass destruction and devastation by the recent flooding. Access to legal services and resources is critical to recovery. Victims need your help now.
Disaster survivors who do not qualify for Legal Aid of Nebraska’s services are being referred to VLP to have their cases placed with attorneys who have agreed to provide free legal assistance. Assistance may include telephone and in-person consultations, limited scope and extended representation. Volunteer attorneys will receive online training and written resources on the issues they are likely to encounter and are covered by the VLP malpractice insurance policy. To volunteer, please contact Laurie Heer Dale at firstname.lastname@example.org or 402-742-8133.
Every Lawyer Can Use This: Fair and Impartial Courts Powerpoint Now Available
NSBA has created a presentation that any lawyer or judge may use when invited to give a presentation to a local civic or school group. The topic is “Fair and Impartial Courts,” including an explanation of how judges are appointed and the role of courts in our society. The presentation, which can be tailored to an audience and time allowed, includes a PowerPoint, a loose script and links to background information. Lawyers are often asked to give local presentations, including for Law Day coming up May 1. Get the presentation and more details online.
Just Updated for Vets and Active Military Members
The NSBA Military and Veterans Law Section has just updated its extensive list of links and phone number for resources for veterans, active duty military, and families. Lawyers may use it to aid clients or share the list with clients. It’s available on the NSBA website.
New Family Law Practice Manual Now Available
Thanks to the generosity of dozens of Nebraska lawyers, a totally new Family Law Practice Manual (2019) is now available through the online NSBA Store. The manual includes topics from the initial client meeting through marriage and the various ways marriages may end. It includes issues related to reproduction, parental and grandparent rights, immigration, disabilities and more. Many chapters include forms. The 1000-page manual is available electronically and in print in two sturdy binders. An abridged table of contents and more details are available in the NSBA Store.

2019 Barristers' Ball Update
Over 500 Nebraska lawyers were greeted to the “Wonderful World of Wonka” by Willy Wonka and three Oompa Loompa’s at the Barristers’ Ball on March 30th at the La Vista Embassy Suites. Proceeds from the Barristers’ Ball supports the Volunteer Lawyers Project, the Nebraska Lawyers Assistance Program, the Rural Practice Initiative and scholarships for the LSAT Prep and Leadership Academy programs. This year’s Robert M. Spire Pro Bono award winner was Harold Rock (posthumously), co-founder of Kutak Rock, LLP. The Robert M. Spire Award is presented annually to a lawyer who has achieved the highest standards of competence, ethics, and professionalism, and who protects and promotes the administration of and access to justice, as was the hallmark of Robert Spire’s career.
The 2019 Visionary Award winners were recognized for their contributions and commitment to the legal profession and for their public service. Visionary Award winners included: Molly Brummond, with the University of Nebraska College of Law; Terry Grennan of Cassem, Tierney, Adams, Gotch & Douglas; and Todd Richardson of Husch Blackwell, LLP.
NSBA President Scott Paul discussed the devastating effects of the recent flooding throughout Nebraska. He reminded the audience of the disaster assistance hotline established by Legal Aid of Nebraska and encouraged all lawyers to get involved through Legal Aid of Nebraska or the Volunteer Lawyers Project. President Paul announced that a portion of the proceeds from the evening would be given directly to Legal Aid of Nebraska to assist with their coordination of legal services for flood victims. We are pleased to announce that $5,900 was raised specifically for Legal Aid of Nebraska.
Thank you to all the sponsors and lawyers for your continued support of the Barristers’ Ball. A special thank you to the Barrister’s Ball Committee and co-chairs Warren and Nancy Whitted. Please join us next year on April 18, 2020 at the Embassy Suites in La Vista for the sixteenth annual Barristers’ Ball!

Casemaker Weekly Update
Searching for Cases with Citation
The most frequently used function of Casemaker for most users is searching by citation. From the home page, you can simply type your citation in. You do not have to worry about being too picky if you use the wrong spacing, punctuation, or capitalization; Casemaker will automatically correct that for you. You do however need to make sure you are using only the reporter citation and the proper abbreviation. Casemaker goes by the Blue Book citation guidelines if you have any questions regarding abbreviations. For example, with Kearns v. Ford Motor Co., 567 F.3d 1120 (9th Cir. 2009), all you would put in the search bar is 567 F.3d 1120. Be sure you select the correct jurisdiction, however – you will not be able to pull up a New Hampshire Superior Court case when searching in US Court of Appeals!
Sometimes a particular citation brings up more than one result, and there is a very good reason for this. The other case shares a page with the case you were searching for. For example, your case may end on page 104 and another case begins on the same page of the reporter. This means even if you are typing in a pin cite, you will still be able to locate the case you are looking for.
The NSBA now offers online classified ads on our website. You can post job openings, rental properties, offices shares etc. Job seekers and posters can find search openings and subscribe to new posting notifications. View a current listing.
Special Thank You
The NSBA gratefully acknowledges the support of the Nebraska State Bar Foundation, the Winthrop & Frances Lane Foundation and the Nebraska Lawyers Foundation.
