Rural Practice Initiative (RPI)
Currently out of 93 counties, there are 12 counties with zero lawyers and an additional 22 counties with three or fewer lawyers, making it difficult for the public to access legal services. The Nebraska State Bar Association established its Rural Practice Initiative in 2013. The program connects rural legal employers with law student and lawyers looking for employment opportunities in rural areas of the state. The NSBA hosts two interview events per year. One in the spring (via zoom) and one in the fall (in-person). To register please click on the appropriate links below. Law students wanting to participate in the program should contact their Career Services Dean.
Greater Nebraska Rural Opportunities Interview Sessions
Dear firms that have participated in the NSBA Rural Practice Initiative:
Over the past few years, we have experienced a decline in the number of students participating in our in-person Rural Practice Initiative Interview Events. The majority of law students research and seek job opportunities through their law school’s online portals and learn about job opportunities through the traditional on campus interview process and through their respective career offices. Therefore, we are encouraging you to work directly with the law schools. If you are interested in signing up for on-campus interviews, please follow the instructions below:
For the University of Nebraska College of Law:
Step 1: Create an Online Account for Your Firm in (12Twenty) our online recruiting program
Step 2: Decide if you want to Sign up for On Campus Interviews or start with a Job posting
Step 3: Decide if you want to engage students in-person or virtually as an initial matter.
Given the unpredictability of early spring weather, many employers who live more than an hour or two away have chosen to have their initial screening interviews virtually. Others prefer to come to campus. Either way we can accommodate you at no cost. We are strongly encouraging rural law firms to Sign-Up for On Campus Interviews before students return to classes and preferably before December 31, 2025 so students know what opportunities there are available for summer and post-graduate positions.
- To sign up for the University of Nebraska College of Law On-Campus Interviews:
1. Sign Up for an employer account (12Twenty)
2. Choose a preferred interview date
3. Create a job posting explaining what a student or graduate can expect and sharing details about the community as well as the position.
4. Questions can be directed to Meghan Rivera at lawcareer@unl.edu
5. We strongly encourage employers to post by December 31 for OCI to help students better understand their options
If you want to talk about your recruiting needs before posting, please reach out to Assistant Dean Tasha Everman at everman@unl.edu
For the Creighton University School of Law:
