Welcoming a new child is a joyful and transformative experience, but navigating parental leave amid a demanding workload can feel daunting. This facilitated discussion offers practical strategies and insights to help attorneys preparing for leave and their supervisors plan a smooth and successful transition. We’ll discuss best practices, share real-world tips, and provide tools to support a balanced and well-communicated leave process.
Shannon Seim, Nebraska State Bar Association Shannon Seim received a B.A. in History from the College of William and Mary in 2011. After college, she joined AmeriCorps and worked at the intersection of early childhood literacy and refugee resettlement, eventually becoming the Director of Heartland Family Service’s school readiness program for refugee families. Seim enrolled in the University of Nebraska College of Law graduated with a JD in 2019 and began working at the NSBA’s Volunteer Lawyers Project. In 2020, Seim became a Robert Wood Johnson Culture of Health Leader and was tasked with creating a strategic initiative to improve health outcomes in Nebraska; she used the opportunity to launch the Nebraska MHAD Project. Shannon is currently the Director of the NSBA’s Volunteer Lawyers Project.
Allyson Felt, Nebraska State Bar Association Allyson Felt is the Director of Continuing Legal Education and Executive Editor of The Nebraska Lawyer magazine at the Nebraska State Bar Association. Prior to her role at the NSBA, Allyson practiced law in both Colorado and Washington. Her practice areas included real estate, including HOA/COA matters and landlord/tenant disputes; business law, including small business formations; estate planning; and more. Allyson earned her law degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Law and a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Caitlin Lovell, Johnson & Mock, PC, LLO With an active litigation practice, Caitlin Lovell protects the rights of her clients in both federal and state court. She handles a range of cases, from DUI and distribution of controlled substances to burglary, theft and sexual offenses. She aggressively protects the rights of her clients in divorces, paternity cases and child custody disputes. Ms. Lovell also vigorously represents clients in civil litigation, including protection orders and personal injury. The Nebraska Criminal Defense Attorneys Association awarded Ms. Lovell the Don Fiedler Memorial Scholarship in 2021 to attend the National Criminal Defense College (NCDC) Trial Practice Institute. The NCDC Trial Practice Institute is the premier and longest-established provider of trial skills training for criminal defense practitioners in the United States, known for its exclusive and intense two-week trial skills program designed solely for criminal defense practitioners. Ms. Lovell graduated from the Nebraska State Bar Association Leadership Academy in 2022, a program meant to develop the leadership skills of participants to allow them to make greater contributions to the legal profession and their community.
Rob Schmidt, Nebraska State Bar Association Rob Schmidt is the General Managing Attorney of the NSBA’s Volunteer Lawyers Project. Rob grew up in Yankton, South Dakota and graduated from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln in 2016. After receiving his undergraduate degree, Rob attended the University of Nebraska College of Law, graduating with distinction in 2020. During law school he was a member of the moot court board and clerked at private firms, the Lincoln City Attorney’s Office, and the Lancaster County Attorney’s Office. Following law school, Rob briefly worked in private practice before accepting a staff attorney position with Legal Aid of Nebraska’s Health, Education, and Law Project. Rob joined Volunteer Lawyers Project in August 2024.
